The CityCares network was founded by New York Cares, Hands On Atlanta, and Greater DC Cares in 1992 to support and expand a growing, innovative alliance of volunteer organizations working to build community through service and civic engagement. Keys to the success of the CityCares alliance are the unique qualities offered to the average
volunteer: strong project management, scheduling flexibility, and team-based programs.
In 1992, CityCares had only 12 fledgling affiliates in the United States. Today, the network has expanded to include a total of 30 affiliates in the United States and 1 international affiliate in the Philippines. Also, there are 13 organizations in the United Kingdom using the CityCares model. CityCares is proud of the support that we have been able to provide to our affiliates within the last ten years. Because of the increase in the quality and quantity of services that we provide to our affiliates, we have seen significant increases in the services that they have been able to provide their communities. Annually, our affiliates mobilize hundreds of thousands of individual volunteers and organize and manage 19.500 projects in which these volunteers participate in serving millions of meals to homeless individuals; help thousands of adults and children learn to read; repair and renovate thousands of homes; and support tens of thousands of people living with HIV.
