The Center for Social Sciences (CSS) was created in 2003 with the aim of supporting and developing social science research and teaching in the Caucasus. It is principally supported by the Higher Education Support Program (HESP) of Open Society Institute (OSI). Since its creation it has run a range of Masters degrees in sociology, political science and international relations, taught in a combination of English and Georgian. These courses have sought to implement best international practice and innovation in recruitment of students and faculty, course content, teaching methodology and assessment. CSS has also become a vanguard of higher educational reform in Georgia. Facilities: The Center has a large lecture room and a small conference room for lectures and seminars as well as a library, computer room and printing facilities. It also contains a library with at least five thousand volumes of academic literature (mostly monographs). This includes books on philosophy, sociology, political science, international relations, psychology, history and religion. The computerised library catalogue is continually being revised and expanded in accordance with the needs of the different Masters courses that the centre runs. The technical standards of the centre are extremely high. It has 10 new PCs with DSL Internet connection that are freely available for students to use all day, as well as photocopying facilities, a small printing-house, projection equipment and other demonstrational facilities. These facilities are available free of charge for course related photocopying, printing etc.
