Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) is one of Germany’s largest and oldest aid and welfare organizations, with more than one million members. ASB currently operates through 11 international offices and implements programmes in more than 20 countries. ASB has had a country office in Yerevan, Armenia, since the end of 2023. The focus of our work is on people who have fled Nagorno-Karabakh. We work with Armenian partners to provide emergency relief and psychosocial support. ASB Armenia is seeking an IT Infrastructure & Application Specialist to support the organization’s application development, IT infrastructure, systems administration, web infrastructure, Microsoft 365 environment, networking, and technical support. This is a hands-on hybrid position combining PHP/Laravel development, Linux system administration, Docker, web infrastructure, Microsoft 365 administration, networking, and technical support. The successful candidate should be comfortable independently investigating issues across the complete application and infrastructure stack.
Purpose of the Position
The IT Infrastructure & Application Specialist will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, developing and supporting ASB Armenia’s applications and IT infrastructure. The position combines PHP/Laravel development, Linux system administration, Docker, web infrastructure, Microsoft 365 administration, networking, and technical support.
The successful candidate should be comfortable independently investigating issues across the complete application and infrastructure stack and will support organizational websites, internal applications, APIs, project-specific systems, production environments, databases, user accounts, networks, and related IT infrastructure.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Responsibilities
Application Development and Maintenance
- Maintain, troubleshoot, refactor, and extend existing PHP-based applications, including legacy systems.
- Develop and maintain applications and modules using Laravel.
- Administer and troubleshoot WordPress websites, plugins, themes, databases, and integrations.
- Maintain organizational websites, internal applications, APIs, and project-specific systems.
- Independently investigate and resolve application and infrastructure incidents when required.
Containerization, Deployment and Web Infrastructure
- Containerize, deploy, and maintain applications using Docker and Docker Compose.
- Administer Linux servers and production web-hosting environments.
- Configure and troubleshoot Nginx/Apache, PHP, SSL/TLS certificates, virtual hosts, redirects, scheduled jobs, and filesystem permissions.
- Manage domains, DNS records, subdomains, SSL certificates, hosting environments, and renewals.
Databases and System Administration
- Maintain MySQL/MariaDB databases, including migrations, data imports/exports, optimization, backup, and restoration.
- Troubleshoot incidents across the application → database → container → operating system → network stack.
- Perform application, operating-system, dependency, and security updates while minimizing service disruption.
- Support migration, archival, restoration, and decommissioning of existing applications and infrastructure.
- Maintain source code and configuration using Git.
Microsoft 365 and Identity Management
- Administer Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, and Microsoft Entra ID, including users, groups, licenses, MFA, authentication, and access management.
- Maintain and troubleshoot email-domain configuration, including SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.
- Administer user accounts, permissions, onboarding/offboarding, and access transfers.
IT Support and Networking
- Provide technical support for Windows workstations, printers, scanners, office networking, Wi-Fi, and internet connectivity.
- Troubleshoot TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewall, routing, and general network connectivity issues.
Backup, Disaster Recovery and Documentation
- Maintain backup and disaster-recovery procedures for application code, databases, uploaded files, and infrastructure configuration.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, system inventories, deployment procedures, backup procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Coordination and User Support
- Coordinate with external hosting providers, software vendors, service providers, and geographically distributed staff.
- Provide technical guidance and training to non-technical users.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Technical Requirements
3+ years relevant professional IT experience.
Strong practical knowledge of PHP and SQL.
Hands-on Laravel.
Hands-on administering/troubleshooting WordPress.
Practical Docker and Docker Compose including images, containers, volumes, networking, environment variables, and logs.
Strong MySQL/MariaDB.
Practical Linux system administration.
Nginx and/or Apache.
HTTP/HTTPS, DNS, SSL/TLS, TCP/IP, DHCP, VPN, routing, and firewalls.
Git and source-code management.
Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, and Microsoft Entra ID administration.
SPF, DKIM, DMARC.
Application/database backup, restoration, and disaster recovery.
Ability to troubleshoot Linux permissions, services, networking, application logs, database connectivity, and containerized environments.
Ability to understand and maintain existing/legacy applications, including systems with limited documentation.
Ability to independently diagnose problems spanning software development and infrastructure.
Strong written and spoken English.
Ability to produce clear technical and operational documentation.
Technical Assessment
Shortlisted candidates will complete a practical 3–4 hour technical assessment involving an existing PHP application and a Linux environment.
The assessment will include:
Reviewing/refactoring existing PHP code.
Migrating a selected module to Laravel while preserving existing functionality and data.
Containerizing the application and database using Docker Compose.
Deploying/configuring the application on Linux behind Nginx.
Identifying/resolving application, database, container, permissions, and infrastructure issues.
Ensuring database and uploaded-file persistence.
Implementing a working backup and restoration procedure.
Providing concise deployment, update, backup, restore, and troubleshooting documentation.
Documentation and AI-assisted development tools are permitted.
Candidates must explain their implementation, troubleshooting process, and technical decisions in a subsequent interview.
The completed solution must be reproducibly deployable on a clean Linux environment using the submitted documentation.
Reporting and Coordination
The IT Infrastructure & Application Specialist will report to the Head of Office Armenia and will work closely with ASB Armenia programme and support teams, geographically distributed staff, external hosting providers, software vendors, service providers, and other relevant stakeholders as required.
