JOB DESCRIPTION

Background
The Government of Armenia will be the host and president of CBD COP17 in October/ November 2026. The COP will come at a pivotal moment, midway through the implementation of the GBF. Parties will review progress and decide on actions to get the GBF on track. WWF Armenia is working closely with the Ministry of Environment, including through the implementation of several field programmes, and active engagement in the revision process of the Armenian NBSAP. WWF (Armenia and International) are in discussions about how best WWF can support the preparations of COP17. WWF is well placed to play a substantive role in the preparations.
WWF has offered support in the following areas:
Amplifying Armenia’s biodiversity conservation commitments and achievements by co-organizing side events, an exhibition, field visits, media and comms.
The high-level segment
Shaping and amplifying key messages from the presidency to parties and, for example:
- encourage ministers (including finance ministers) to attend the high-level segment, including a roundtable
- encourage parties to announce new commitments or showcase success stories that can be scaled up.
Supporting the adoption of key COP decisions
Working with parties to find solutions that bridge different positions while aiming for ambitious outcomes.
An inclusive COP
Supporting Armenia and others to organise (side-)events and other Green zone activities.
Global media and public attention
Elevating the COP in media and with the public, using WWF’s expertise and global network of communicators and contacts with media and high-profile individuals, in support of the Presidency.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS
The Senior Consultant will be responsible for the organisation and implementation of WWF’s support to Armenia’s preparations for the CBD COP17. Working under the guidance of the Country Director and in close collaboration with WWF International’s Global Policy Impact Department (GPID), the Senior Consultant will collaborate frequently with WWF colleagues around the world, to make best use of the WWF’s expertise and connections to provide political, technical, comm’s and advocacy support to COP17 preparations.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Prioritisation and planning
- Support the prioritisation and planning of the various elements of WWF’s support to COP17 preparations;
- Ensure that agreed activities are on track; regularly updating line management, escalating any relevant issues in a timely manner to appropriate levels.
Coordination and implementation
- Depending on the final agreed priorities, the consultant will be responsible for coordinating and implementing the following areas of work:
(a) Amplify Armenia’s biodiversity conservation commitments and achievements, for example by co-organizing high profile side events, an exhibition, field visits, media and comms.
(b) Support the high-level segment, for example by:
- Shaping and amplifying key messages from the presidency to parties.
- Encourage ministers (including finance ministers) to attend the high-level segment, including a roundtable.
- Encourage parties to announce new commitments or showcase success stories that can be scaled up.
(c) Support the adoption of key COP decisions
- Maintain information flows between the Government of Armenia and WWF thematic leads about solutions that bridge different positions while aiming for ambitious outcomes.
- Create opportunities for exchange between the Government of Armenia and WWF thematic expand others.
(d) Promote an inclusive COP
- Support Armenia and others to organise selected (side-)events and other Blue and Green zone activities.
(e) Enhance global media and public attention
- Work with the WWF International comm’s team to develop and implement a comm’s and media plan for COP17, in support of the COP17 Presidency.
Support to network wide engagement with COP17
- Contribute to regularly updating the WWF network on COP17 preparations;
- Contribute to capacity building about COP17 of the WWF network.
- Performs other tasks designated by the line manager
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
: 
- Master’s degree in political science, International Relations, Economics, Environmental science or equivalent professional experience;
- At least five-years work experience in a relevant field;
- International experience, either through working abroad or through work for an international organisation;
- Good understanding of and experience with the processes of the Convention of Biological Diversity, or similar relevant experience, including about the political dynamics around global environmental governance;
- Good knowledge and understanding of nature conservation, sustainable development and related issues;
- Experience with the organisation of events.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Ability and enthusiasm in providing fast and accurate information and in implementing short term but demanding tasks;
- Excellent ability to communicate complex issues to different audiences in different forms (written, oral);
- Discretion, reliability, flexibility, accuracy;
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks and demands and to shift priorities at short notice;
- Ability to perform under pressure;
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment;
- Capacity to work independently in an intense team environment;
- Excellent organisational and people skills;
- Fluent English is essential; other languages an advantage;
- Highly computer literate, competent in use of spreadsheets and other electronic tools;
- Experience in working with Government agencies in Armenia at senior official’s level;
- In depth familiarity with WWF International (structure, processes, themes, key positions, organisational culture, etc.);
